Noisy Fridge? What Buzzing, Clicking and Rattling Sounds Mean
By the SuperFix Mechanical team · 6 min read
Modern fridges are quieter than older models, which means that when something does make a noise, you notice. Many sounds are completely normal: gentle humming, a soft gurgle of refrigerant, the occasional pop as plastic parts expand and contract. But a few sounds are early warnings that a fan, compressor or defrost component is about to fail. Here is how to tell the difference.
Normal fridge sounds
A fridge cycles on and off through the day. When the compressor starts, you will hear a low hum, and a faint gurgling as refrigerant flows through the lines. A soft click when the compressor starts or stops is normal, as is a whoosh of air when the fans start.
Ice makers produce their own sounds: water filling, ice dropping into the bin, and a short buzz when the fill valve opens. Crackling or popping from the freezer can be ice expanding, or plastic parts shifting after a defrost cycle. If the fridge is cooling normally and the sounds are occasional, there is rarely a reason to worry.
Rattling and vibrating
A fridge that rattles or vibrates is often just touching something. Check that the fridge is level and that the feet are firmly on the floor. Make sure it is not touching a wall or cabinet, and that the drip tray under the fridge is seated properly. Items on top of the fridge can also buzz in time with the compressor.
Inside, make sure bottles, jars and shelves are not rattling against the back wall. These simple adjustments solve a surprising number of noise complaints.
Squealing, chirping or whirring
A high-pitched squeal or chirp from the freezer usually points to the evaporator fan motor. As the motor bearings wear, the fan can squeal or scrape, and ice build-up on the fan blades can cause a knocking or grinding sound. A fan that has failed completely often leads to a warm fridge section and a cold freezer.
A loud whirring from the bottom or back of the fridge can be the condenser fan. Dust and pet hair around the fan and coils can make it noisy and can cause it to overheat. Unplug the fridge, vacuum the coils and fan area, and see if the noise improves.
Clicking that repeats
One click when the compressor starts is normal. Repeated clicking every few minutes, with a fridge that does not get cold, is a different story. It often indicates a failing start relay or overload protector on the compressor, which is trying to start and shutting off. The start relay is a relatively small part, but the fault can also point to a compressor that is struggling.
If your fridge clicks on and off repeatedly and the temperature is rising, keep the doors closed to preserve the cold and book a diagnostic quickly to prevent food loss.
Loud buzzing or humming
A loud, constant buzz, especially accompanied by a fridge that is not cooling, can indicate a compressor under strain. A buzzing sound just when the ice maker is filling can instead be a water valve issue, such as low water pressure or a partly closed supply valve.
A fridge that has been moved or recently installed may take a day to settle, but a loud or growing hum that persists beyond that should be inspected.
Cold weather and garage fridges
In Ottawa winters, fridges and freezers in unheated garages can behave unusually. Many fridges are designed to operate in a limited ambient temperature range, and in very cold spaces the compressor may not run enough to keep the fridge section cold, even while the freezer stays cold. If your garage fridge struggles in January, moving it to a heated space is often the most reliable fix.
When to call a professional
- Squealing, grinding or knocking from inside the freezer.
- Repeated clicking with a warm fridge.
- A loud buzz or hum that gets worse over time.
- A burning smell or hot spots on the back of the fridge.
- Noise combined with frost build-up or water leaking.
Noises that come with cooling problems should never be ignored: the cost of lost groceries adds up quickly. A technician can find the failed fan, relay or sensor, replace it, and tell you whether the compressor is healthy.
